Moodle is one of the most widely used learning management systems in the world, and for good reason: it is open source, endlessly configurable, and free to host. But that flexibility comes with a learning curve. The moment you want Moodle to talk to an outside tool, like a plagiarism and AI-writing checker, you run into a wall of unfamiliar words: plugin, LTI, API token, course sync, grade passback, SSO. This guide walks through what those words mean and how an integration actually works, in plain English, so you can set one up with confidence instead of guessing.
What "integration" actually means in Moodle
An integration is simply a connection that lets Moodle and another tool exchange information automatically, without anyone copying and pasting between two browser tabs. When a plagiarism checker is integrated with Moodle, a student's submitted assignment flows straight from the Moodle assignment page into the checker, the checker analyzes it, and the originality and AI-detection results flow back to the same place the teacher already grades.
Moodle supports two broad ways of connecting to outside tools, and it helps to know which one you are dealing with.
The first is a plugin. A plugin is a piece of software you install directly into your Moodle site. Plagiarism checkers commonly ship as a "plagiarism plugin," a special category Moodle reserves for exactly this purpose. Once installed and enabled, it adds an originality check option inside the standard assignment activity. Plugins are powerful because they live inside Moodle and can hook deeply into the submission process, but they require an administrator with server access to install them.
The second is LTI, short for Learning Tools Interoperability. LTI is an open standard that lets Moodle launch an external tool through a secure handshake, no installation required. You paste in a URL, a key, and a secret, and Moodle and the tool trust each other from then on. LTI is the friendlier option when you cannot or do not want to install server-side software, and it is the same standard most modern education tools speak.
Both approaches end up in the same place: an assignment that quietly runs an originality and AI check on every submission. The difference is mostly about who installs what, and how much control you have.
How the data actually flows
Under the hood, an integration is a series of small, automatic exchanges. It helps to picture the round trip.
When a student uploads a paper, Moodle hands a copy of that file to the checker through a secure connection, usually along with a little context: which course it belongs to, which assignment, and which student. The checker stores the document, compares it against its sources (web pages, academic databases, and previously submitted student work), runs its AI-writing analysis, and produces a report with a similarity percentage and an AI-likelihood signal.
That report then travels back to Moodle. Depending on how the integration is built, the teacher sees a similarity score and a link right on the submission row, clicks through to the full color-coded report, and never leaves the gradebook. The student, if the teacher allows it, may see their own originality score too, which turns the tool into a teaching aid rather than a gotcha.
The connection that makes all of this trustworthy is an API token (sometimes called an API key). Think of it as a long, secret password that identifies your school to the checker. It proves that submissions are coming from your authorized Moodle site and not from a stranger, and it ties usage back to your account. Guard it like a password, because anyone who has it can act as your institution.
The four kinds of "sync" you will hear about
"Sync" just means keeping two systems in agreement so nobody has to update both by hand. Integration vendors throw around four sync terms, and they are easy to mix up.
Student sync keeps your roster current. When a student enrolls in or drops a course in Moodle, that change is reflected in the connected tool automatically. Without it, you would be manually adding and removing names, and a dropped student might still appear in your reports.
Course sync does the same for courses and sections. As classes are created each term, the matching structure appears in the integrated tool, so reports and settings are organized the way your school is organized rather than dumped into one undifferentiated pile.
Grade sync, often called grade passback, is the one teachers love most. After the checker returns a result and the teacher assigns a grade, that grade is written back into the Moodle gradebook automatically. Teachers grade in one place, and students see results where they expect to. With LTI, grade passback is a built-in feature of the standard.
Single sign-on, or SSO, is technically about access rather than data, but it is usually bundled with sync. SSO means teachers and students use their existing Moodle login to reach the connected tool, with no separate password to remember or reset. It removes a huge amount of friction and a common source of support tickets.
You do not always need all four. A small department might only care about getting originality reports on a handful of assignments, in which case a basic plugin with no roster sync is plenty. A district rolling the tool out to thousands of users will want student sync, course sync, grade sync, and SSO all switched on so the system maintains itself.
How setup actually goes
Every vendor words their steps slightly differently, but a Moodle integration almost always follows the same arc. Knowing the shape ahead of time makes the official instructions far less intimidating.
- Confirm you have the right access. Installing a plugin or registering an external tool requires a Moodle administrator account, not just a teacher account. If you are a classroom teacher, this is the step where you loop in your IT department.
- Get your credentials from the checker. Log into your plagiarism tool's account settings and locate the integration section. You are looking for an API token, or for LTI a tool URL plus a consumer key and shared secret. Copy these somewhere safe.
- Install the plugin or register the tool in Moodle. For a plugin, an admin uploads it through Site administration and enables it under the plagiarism settings. For LTI, an admin adds an external tool under Site administration with the URL, key, and secret from the previous step.
- Turn on the features you want. This is where you decide whether students can see their own scores, whether AI detection is on, and which sync options are active. These settings usually live both at the site level (defaults for everyone) and inside each individual assignment (per-class overrides).
- Run one test submission. Before announcing anything to staff, submit a sample document to a test assignment and confirm a report comes back. Five minutes here saves a flood of confused emails later.
The whole process is typically a single afternoon for an administrator, and once it is done it stays done. New courses and students flow in on their own if sync is enabled.
How teachers use it day to day
After setup, the experience is meant to be invisible. A teacher creates an assignment in Moodle exactly as before. The only new touch is an originality check option in the assignment settings, which is usually on by default once the integration is live.
Students submit normally. As each submission lands, the checker analyzes it in the background, and within a few minutes a similarity score and AI signal appear next to each name. The teacher clicks a score to open the full report, which highlights matching passages and links them to their sources. Grades go into the gradebook, and grade sync carries them back if it is enabled. No second login, no separate dashboard, no exporting files.
The teaching value comes from letting students see their own reports before the deadline. When a student can check their draft, see an unintentional patch of unquoted text, and fix it, the tool stops being a punishment and starts being feedback. That single setting changes the whole culture around the integration.
Common misconceptions
"An integration means the tool grades for me." No. A plagiarism and AI checker produces evidence, not verdicts. A high similarity score might be a properly quoted block; an AI flag is a signal to look closer, not proof. A human still makes every call.
"Installing a plugin will slow down or break Moodle." Reputable plagiarism plugins run their analysis on the vendor's servers, not yours, so they add negligible load. The heavy lifting happens off-site, and only the small report comes back.
"Sync exposes student data to anyone." Properly configured, the only thing leaving Moodle is what you choose to send, protected by your API token and an encrypted connection. Before enabling anything, confirm the vendor's data handling meets your district's privacy requirements, and treat that token as confidential.
"LTI and a plugin are competing choices and one is clearly better." They are just different doors into the same room. Plugins offer deeper hooks; LTI offers easier setup with no server access. Pick based on what your IT situation allows, not on hype.
